Solving Uneven Winter Room Temperatures

Solving uneven temperatures in the home

Why Are Some Rooms Too Hot While Others are Too Cold?

During the winter it’s not unusual to have temperature differences of several degrees from room to room. Attics, basements and additions usunally have the greatest air temperature differences. When one room is uncomfortably hot or cold there are several factors to consider.

Inadequate Insulation

In a cold climate like Michigan, good insulation is essential. The recommended R-value for attics is 43, and an R-value of 21 for walls. Weather sealing around windows and doors is also important to eliminate drafts and heat loss.

Air Delivery System

One of the most common problems we see in HVAC systems that are not heating or cooling well are air ducts that are not properly sized to deliver air throughout the home. To check for potential problems Superior Plumbing & Heating can perform an air delivery analysis to determine if air is reaching all areas of your home.

It’s also important to leave all of the air ducts open throughout the house. Central heating and cooling systems are designed to work with the air volume of every room. Closing air ducts can reduce the performance of the system and waste energy.

Air Duct Leaks

Sealing the gaps and joints in your air ducts will allow your furnace and air conditioner to work more efficiently and ensure all the air reaches all areas of your home. Aeroseal duct sealing uses advanced technology to fill the smallest gaps and holes that can reduce air delivery.

Difficult To Heat Rooms

Three-season porches, basements, attics and new additions can be difficult to heat and cool using existing central HVAC systems. Simply expanding the duct work to reach new room may not be enough if the furnace is not the right size. One option for heating individual rooms is to use a ductless mini-split heating and cooling system. Installing a ductless system is a simple process for most homes and provides efficient temperature control for individual rooms year round.
